Ingredients

For the Salad
  • 2 pieces ripe pears, sliced Choose juicy, sweet varieties like Bartlett or Bosc for the best flavor.
  • 1 tbsp butter Use high-quality unsalted butter for an authentic taste.
  • 1 tbsp honey Opt for local honey; its subtle floral notes will enhance the sweetness of the pears.
  • 4 cups mixed greens Baby spinach and arugula work wonderfully for texture and flavor balance.
  • 1/3 cup crumbled blue cheese I recommend Roquefort or Gorgonzola for their strong flavor and creamy texture.
  • 1/4 cup toasted walnuts For a nutty crunch. Be sure to toast them lightly to enhance their flavor.
  • 2 tbsp balsamic glaze A drizzle of high-quality balsamic reduction adds the finishing touch.
  • Salt and pepper Seasoning is paramount to elevate the flavors.

Method

Caramelizing the Pears
  1. In a skilled skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Once melted, stir in the honey until fully combined.
  2. Add the sliced pears to the skillet, cooking for 3-4 minutes on each side until they turn golden and caramelized. Keep an eye on them, as cooking times can vary based on the ripeness of the pears.
  3. You’ll know they’re ready when they are tender but still retain a bit of structure.
  4. For added depth of flavor, sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon over the pears while they cook.
Assembling the Salad
  1. In a large bowl, toss the mixed greens together. Add the crumbled blue cheese and toasted walnuts, ensuring they are evenly distributed.
  2. Once the pears are caramelized, carefully layer them on top of the salad.
  3. Drizzle the balsamic glaze over the top and season with salt and pepper. Toss gently to combine before serving.
Serving the Salad
  1. Enjoy immediately to appreciate the warmth of the pears against the crisp greens.

Notes

Make sure the butter is at room temperature for easy melting. Store the salad components separately for optimal freshness. Omit walnuts for a nut-free option.
